Three things worth trying yourself

A good share of “my site is down” turns out to be one misbehaving plugin, and WordPress has built-in ways to deal with that. If one of these gets you back online, you do not need me and you have lost nothing but ten minutes.

Check the site’s admin email inboxSince WordPress 5.2 a fatal error triggers an email to the admin address containing a secret recovery mode link. Logging in through it pauses the extension that broke the site so you can deactivate it — and the pause applies only to your session, so visitors are not affected. Most people never think to look, which is why the error screen itself says to check your email.

Turn the error log onAdd define('WP_DEBUG', true); and define('WP_DEBUG_LOG', true); to wp-config.php and the actual error gets written to wp-content/debug.log. That turns “white screen, no idea” into a file name and a line number — which is usually enough to identify the culprit. Turn it back off afterwards.

Rename the plugins folderOver FTP or your host’s file manager, rename wp-content/plugins to plugins_old. That deactivates everything at once. If the site comes back, it is a plugin — rename the folder back and re-enable them one at a time until it breaks again.

One case where you should not do any of this

If the site looks hacked — spam links in search results, redirects to somewhere strange, a browser warning — stop. Deleting the obvious file destroys the evidence needed to find how they got in, and almost always leaves the backdoor behind, so the site gets reinfected within days. That one is worth handing over rather than poking at.

How fast can you actually start?

I reply the same day, usually within a few hours (I’m on Pakistan time, GMT+5). Most straightforward fixes are done the same day I take them on. If I’m mid-project and can’t get to yours quickly, I’ll say so immediately rather than leave you waiting.

Will I lose my content?

That’s exactly why a backup is taken before anything is touched. In most cases nothing is lost at all. If the site was already damaged before I saw it, I’ll tell you honestly what’s recoverable and what isn’t.

What if you can’t fix it?

You don’t pay. If it turns out to be a hosting-side fault or something needing your host or plugin vendor, I’ll tell you that — and give you the specifics to hand them so you’re not stuck relaying guesses.

My site was hacked. Is a cleanup enough?

Cleaning removes the damage, but something let them in — usually an outdated plugin or a weak password. Cleanup includes closing that door and rotating credentials. Without that step, sites get reinfected within weeks.

Do you work weekends or out of hours?

For genuine emergencies — a down site or a broken store — yes, where I can. Message me and I’ll tell you straight away what’s realistic rather than going quiet.

How do I stop this happening again?

Most emergencies I see trace back to an unattended update, an expired licence or a missing backup. That’s precisely what a maintenance plan prevents — but the fix comes first, and there’s no pressure to take one.
