Opportunity snapshot
ScopeSnap is a free scope creep checker, built as a content experiment first. It is Idea #007 in the CyberTrickz 100 series. A freelancer pastes the agreed project scope and a client’s new request. The tool says whether the request looks in scope, needs clarification or out of scope, estimates the extra hours and fee, and drafts a reply in three tones.
| Opportunity score | 60/100 |
|---|---|
| Research confidence | 68/100 |
| Primary customer | Freelancers, web designers, developers, consultants and small agencies working to a written scope |
| Initial offer | Free checker plus a free Scope Creep Kit. No billing, no accounts. |
| Status | Prototype / demo checker below. No live AI connected yet. |
Executive summary
FACT: the category is crowded. Drift Catch lists a free plan and paid tiers at $9, $19 and $39 per month on annual billing. ScopeGuard lists $23 and $47 per month for Solo and Pro. ScopeStamp offers a $49 lifetime option. Fenscope, ScopeLock AI, ScopeAuditor and EasyScope target the same “check a request against the SOW” job.
SIGNAL: demand for the surrounding education is large, per the keyword research for this report: scope creep 40,500 searches a month, scope of work 27,100, project scope 14,800, statement of work 14,800, scope creep meaning 12,100, change request 8,100, out of scope 6,600, scope of work template 5,400 and statement of work template 5,400. Direct tool terms are almost empty: change request software about 90, client approval software about 50, scope creep calculator and tracker effectively zero.
ASSUMPTION: people who arrive for a definition or a template will use a free checker, come back to it, and some will eventually pay for volume, branding or approval links. None of that is proven.
That split shapes the plan. Demand is educational, not product-shaped, so the test is a funnel: useful content, then free templates, then the free checker, then (maybe) a paid plan. Building SaaS first would test the weakest link.
The problem: what scope creep is and why it costs money
Scope creep meaning: a project quietly grows beyond what was agreed, through extra pages, features, revision rounds or deliverables, without a matching change in price or deadline. The project scope is the boundary of the work. A scope of work (or the more formal statement of work) writes that boundary down. A change request is the controlled way to add something new: described, priced and approved before work starts. Work outside the agreed boundary is out of scope.
The freelancer’s daily problem is smaller than any of those documents. A client writes “can we just add…”, “one tiny change…” or “while you’re there…”, and the freelancer has a few minutes to decide whether it is included, whether to ask a question or whether to quote extra, and then to word the reply so the relationship survives. One request is cheap. A pile of them is a margin problem.
Try the prototype checker (Demo)
This is the experiment. It runs in your browser with simple keyword rules, so it is not AI analysis and can be wrong. It is here so you can judge the workflow, not the accuracy. Try it, then ask yourself whether you would use it over pasting the same text into ChatGPT.
Prototype / Demo. This checker uses simple built-in keyword rules, not a live AI model. It shows how the tool would work. Nothing you type is sent anywhere or stored.
Competitors and pricing
| Provider/substitute | Offer | Published price signal | What it already does well |
|---|---|---|---|
| Drift Catch | Scope and revision tracking, change orders, client portal, payment | Free plan; $9 / $19 / $39 per month on annual billing; US and Canada only | Whole freelancer workflow, including collecting payment |
| ScopeGuard | AI verdicts on requests, unbilled-hours tracking, approval portal | $23 and $47 per month annual, per search listing | Direct in / borderline / out verdict plus tracking |
| Fenscope | Upload a SOW, check a request, generate pushback reply and change-order PDF | Not confirmed on its page during research | Nearly identical core flow |
| ScopeStamp | Turns scope creep into approved change orders; no client account needed | $49 lifetime option | Low-cost one-off purchase |
| EasyScope | Scope, change orders, quotes and invoicing | Not captured | Document workflow beyond the verdict |
| ScopeGuard Studio | Spreadsheet tracker and checklist | €9 one-off per search listing | Cheap, no-signup substitute |
| General AI chat | Paste scope and request, ask for a verdict and a reply | Already paid for or free | The substitute that matters most, because the core job is a prompt |
The opportunity and the gap
There is little gap in the verdict itself. A thin wrapper that returns a colour and an email is what ChatGPT already does. The possible wedge is narrower, and mostly about distribution:
- no account, and nothing pasted is stored, which suits people pasting confidential client material;
- pricing and timeline estimates in the freelancer’s own currency and hourly rate, including GBP, which Drift Catch does not serve;
- an honest “needs clarification” band that says which question to ask the client, instead of forcing a yes or no;
- free templates and checklists that can rank for the large educational terms and lead into the checker.
None of these is a moat. If the free checker does not earn repeat use, the idea should be closed.
Monetisation (hypotheses, not built)
ASSUMPTION: a free tier of three checks a month, then roughly £9 a month for 30 checks and approval links, and £19 a month for unlimited checks, projects, PDF change records and branding. These numbers sit near what Drift Catch charges and are untested. No billing will be built until free users show repeat use.
Freelancer scope disputes are episodic, so churn would likely be high unless approval links, change records or a project history give a reason to stay. No conversion rate, market size or revenue figure has been invented for this report.
MVP
Build now
- The free checker above, in demo mode, then a real model behind it once the funnel shows interest.
- The free Scope Creep Kit (below), as the email capture.
- Event tracking for started, completed, copied and signed up, never including pasted text.
DON’T BUILD YET
- Accounts, saved projects, contract PDF parsing or approval links.
- Stripe or any billing.
- Invoicing, time tracking, CRM, Slack or email forwarding.
- A dozen SEO pages. Dedicated pages for scope of work template, change request template and the rest wait until this report earns traction.
- Any claim that a request is legally or contractually out of scope.

Risks
- Direct competitors already have the same core flow, some with free plans.
- General AI chat is a free substitute for the verdict and the reply.
- An AI classification can be wrong, and a freelancer who relies on it against a client could be embarrassed or in breach. The product must say so plainly and tell users to read their agreement.
- Pasted client material is confidential, so privacy handling is a trust requirement.
- Educational search traffic may not convert to tool use, which is exactly what this test measures.
Kill criteria and seven-day validation
- Day 1: publish this report with the demo checker.
- Day 2: connect a real model privately and run 20 anonymised real requests past 5 freelancers, side by side with a plain ChatGPT prompt.
- Day 3: publish the first two template pages only if the Day 2 test passes.
- Days 4–6: send traffic from communities where it is allowed and measure checks started, completed, replies copied and signups.
- Day 7: count repeat checks and kit signups.
Pass: at least 100 completed checks; a copy rate above 40% on completed checks; at least 30 kit signups; at least 15% of users running a second check within seven days; and freelancers agreeing with the verdict in at least 70% of the 20 test cases and preferring it to a plain chat prompt in a majority of them.
Kill: fewer than 30 kit signups from 500 visitors, a copy rate below 20%, little repeat use, or testers saying a plain ChatGPT prompt is just as good.
Founder fit
Good fit for someone who can publish useful educational pages and treat the tool as a conversion step. Poor fit for someone who wants to compete feature for feature with project-management products.
Final score
| Factor | Score | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Pain | 13/20 | Frequent and costly, but individual requests are small |
| Willingness to pay | 10/20 | Competitors charge $9–$47 monthly, but free substitutes are strong |
| Competition gap | 4/15 | At least six direct competitors and general AI chat |
| MVP feasibility | 14/15 | A single flow ships in days |
| Recurring revenue | 6/10 | Episodic use unless approvals or records create retention |
| Acquisition | 7/10 | Large educational demand; direct tool demand near zero |
| SEO | 4/5 | Strong volume, hard to rank against established publishers |
| AI advantage | 2/5 | The core task is a prompt anyone can run |

You are a senior product engineer. Build ScopeSnap, a validation-first scope checker for freelancers.
PRODUCT PRINCIPLE
One workflow only: original agreed scope plus a new client request produces a scope decision. The result is an AI-assisted project-management assessment, never a legal or contractual determination. Always tell the user to review their agreement.
PRD
Customer: freelancers, designers, developers, consultants and small agencies working to a written scope.
Core job: decide quickly whether a request is included, unclear or additional work, then reply professionally.
Success: users complete a check, copy the reply and return for a second check. Test against a plain ChatGPT prompt before building anything else.
SCREENS
1. Checker: scope textarea, request textarea, currency and hourly rate.
2. Result: classification, confidence, reasoning, relevant scope, new requirements, hours range, price range, timeline range, three reply tones with copy.
3. Free kit landing page with email capture.
RESULT SCHEMA
classification: in_scope | needs_clarification | out_of_scope; confidence; explanation; relevant_scope[]; new_requirements[]; estimated_hours {minimum, maximum}; timeline_days {minimum, maximum}; client_response {friendly, professional, firm}.
ARCHITECTURE
Server-side provider interface with a clearly labelled demo mode that never pretends to be real analysis. API keys stay server-side. Validate model output against the schema.

IDEA #007/100 — SCOPESNAP
“Can we just add…” is the most expensive sentence in freelancing.
ScopeSnap is a free prototype checker: paste the agreed scope, paste the client’s request, and see whether it is in scope, unclear or extra work, with a reply you can send.
Score: 60/100
Research confidence: 68/100
Verdict: Hold / validate the content funnel
The honest problem: at least six tools already do this, and a general AI chat can do the core of it.

Research it. Validate it. Build it.
Idea #007/100: ScopeSnap.
Scope creep gets 40,500 searches a month, but “scope creep software” gets almost none, and Drift Catch, ScopeGuard, Fenscope and others already sell the checker. The open question is whether free templates and a free tool can beat a plain ChatGPT prompt. Score 60/100, verdict: hold as a product, validate the funnel.
IDEA #007/100: ScopeSnap
Paste the scope. Paste the request. Know whether to charge extra.
Score: 60/100. Verdict: Hold / validate the free-tool funnel first.
First comment
The full report includes competitor pricing, kill criteria, a free prototype checker and the build prompt. Key limitation: the keyword volumes come from supplied research and were not independently re-checked, and the checker is a keyword-rule demo, not AI.

ScopeSnap would compare an agreed scope with a new client request and say whether to charge extra. Demand for the topic is large, but at least six products already sell the checker and general AI does the core of it.
